It’s that magical time of the year! A time where you hear the same songs over and over and over again through department store intercoms and office parties. But, throughout the years, there have been some obscure gems that get me in the Christmas spirit. Here are some of my favorites.
The Kinks – Father Christmas
First of all, the Kinks were just s great band full of attitude. They filled the airwaves with distorted guitar long before anyone else. The feeling of pure hooligan shenanigans this song emotes is just perfect for this time of year.
Weird Al Yankovic – The Night Santa Went Crazy
I was in my formative years when Weird Al released this album. To this day it’s still an album I will listen to from front to back. This demented little ditty closed out the album, but opened my heart to the spirit of Christmas. Plus, his backing band is absolutely killer, they have played pretty much every style of music there is. I’m Chuck, and I’m an ‘Al’coholic.
The Vandals – Oi! To The World
The Vandals have been funny their whole multi-decade career, and their Christmas album “Oi! To The World” just makes me as jolly as old St Nick. Plus, guitarist Warren Fitzgerald, aka Mutant Boy, is an absolute shredder and maniac.
Chuck Berry – Run Rudolf Run
Of course, where would electric guitar and my Christmas spirit be without another Chuck? This song makes dads spontaneously erupt in air guitar solos that result in spilled eggnog and a potential little brother or sister to be born in late August.
The Ramones – Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight)
Nothing says holiday cheer like leather jackets and a message to save the fighting for another day.
Elmo & Patsy – Grandma Got Ran Over By A Reindeer
It’s not Christmas until my dad picks up an acoustic guitar and leads a singalong of this ode to the irresponsibility of previous generations. Is the investigation closed on this murder yet? Has there been justice? WE NEED ANSWERS!
Cheers and Happy Holidays,
